A centuries-old tree in Agona, in the Ashanti Region, believed to have been planted by the legendary priest Okomfo Anokye, has been uprooted following strong winds that swept through the community on Tuesday, November 3, 2026.

The tree, known as the Onton tree, is regarded by many as an important historical and spiritual symbol associated with the Asante Kingdom. Some historical accounts put its age at approximately 330 years, with its planting traced to around 1690.

Videos circulating on social media show the tree lying upside down after the incident, with its roots exposed above the ground and its branches resting on the earth.

Its unusual position has attracted considerable attention in Agona, where some residents have interpreted the manner in which it fell as a possible spiritual sign.

Footage from the scene shows several people gathering around the fallen tree. Some recorded the incident on their mobile phones, while others watched and discussed what had happened.

In another video recorded before the tree fell, an elderly man described it as spiritually powerful, warning that it was not an ordinary tree to be treated casually.

Although the circumstances of its fall have been attributed to strong winds, the incident has renewed attention on a tree that has long featured in the historical and spiritual traditions associated with Okomfo Anokye and the Asante Kingdom.
